To start at the beginning the Dolphin SCR is a very beautiful machine and very nice to dive with, however, it has some disadvantages too. For the Dolphin too the principle 'Plan you Dive and Dive your Plan' applies, as for OC diving. In case you plan a dive at 30m and circumstances only allow a 15m diving depth more gas is used then actually necessary provided you dive with the right gasmix and nozzle. That is why I decided to convert my Dolphin to a manual controlled closed circuit rebreather (mCCR).

A mCCR is much more flexible and has the advantage it can be dived on a fixed PPO2. When diving OC or SCR, a fixed percentage of oxygen is used. The PPO2 will increase proportionally with the increasing depth. When diving mCCR the percentage of oxygen in the mix is variable and thus the desired percentage can be injected in the loop at any depth. This is advantageous with regard to nitrogen absorption in the blood and with regard to decompression time.

The way to achieve this is to make use of the KISS principle or rEvodream  where pure oxygen is injected into the exhale counterlung with a slightly lower flow rate than the natural metabolic need of the diver. In other words, the PPO2 in the loop decreases in case the diver does not interfere. He injects the O2 manually on a regular basis using a bypass. In order to dive safely, measuring of the PPO2 is required, having at least 2 independent PPO2 gauges; and 3 oxygen cells should be used!

TecMe designed below shown components for the Dräger Dolphin for 3 oxygen cells, PSR-11-39-MD3. They are a lot smaller than the usual PSR-11-39-MD, however, these do not fit in. One should pay attention when using the rEvodream oxygen gauges, the thread has to be PG7.

The oxygen cylinder has a first stage with a fixed IP which is not influenced by the ambient pressure. Thus leaving the injected O2 steady irrespective of depth, as the oxygen usage only depends on the divers physical exertions and is not influenced by depth. The regulators wet chamber is being closed by an O-ringed plug that prevents the ambient pressure from changing. The Apeks DS4 first stage and the plug can be obtained from Tec-me.

This is the heart of the rebreather, the Hydrogom valve. This constantly allows an adjustable flow of oxygen into the system (slightly lower than the divers metabolism). Additional O2 can be injected into the loop via the manual bypass on the side.

In order to determine the correct O2 flow,  the oxygen cylinder's first stage's ambient pressure  is to be fine-tuned. In case the flow rate is set correctly the PPO2 will remain constant (it will certainly not increase!) if the diver is fully in rest (for example: sitting on a couch). Light strain (for instance: walking) will cause the PPO2 to decrease a bit, and heavy strain (for instance: running up the stairs) will cause the PPO2 to decrease much more, the diver will have to use the bypass. (For setting the right flow we need a flow indicator. The flow should be approx 0.8L/min - oxygen in my system is injected directly into the canister).

If the diver descends the diluent has to be injected into the loop in order to compensate the ambient pressure. In order to achieve this we use the original Dolphin distribution valve, which functions as a normal regulator of a first stage. This photo shows the Dräger injectors still in place.

Overview of the back side of the rebreather. On the left hand side the diluent, on the right hand side the oxygen bottle and below a 2 or 5 L 200 bar bail out cylinder. The O2 cylinder is a 4 L 200 bar version, as well as the diluent cylinder. The wing is an ED adjusted for the Dräger Dolphin. The diluents first stage cylinder is a Poseidon cylinder. Below you can see the back pack is slightly longer so that the other cylinders will be less discomforting.

An extra safety feature is a flow control valve to flush the loop in case there is too much O2 in the system. This can be seen at the front left hand side.
